What happened when Combat meets Comedy? The answer is one heck of an AWESOME performance y’all.
I’m so-so-so loving this show. That is an awesome non verbal show to watch. Worth every single cent I spent on them tix. My thanks goes to Farid and Diha for telling me about this show. You both know how crazy I’m when it comes to martial arts. Yayy.
Back to the show. JUMP is about the life of an average Korean family; an authocratic grandfather, a drunken uncle, a tricky father, a super power chopping mother, a gymnast daughter and a nerdy son-in-law. This show combines the traditional Korean martial arts of Taekwondo, Hapkido, Kick boxing and also the flexibility of gymnastics skills, in a comical style. The family members are martial arts experts and perform martial arts in their daily lives. Skills like somersaults, wall-walks, aerial rotations, flying kicks, and some dueling scenes are the regular training around this family’s household. A touch of light comical romantic scene adds flavour to the show and also not to forget the authentic and awesome Taekwondo skills, to bleed your nose. (I know I did. Heehee). The plot of story is simple and light, and yet very entertaining. The story gets interesting when there are 2 burglars break into their house, and how this family deals with the situation. Apart from their performances, they also invite 2 people from the floor to come up on stage to spice up the show.
Basically there are 4 episodes in this show. First episode is when the grandfather brings back a visitor (future grandson-in-law) to match with his granddaughter. This episode shows them cleaning the house as to welcome the special guest, then when everything goes smoothly, the drunken uncle comes in and messes the whole house again. Then, that’s when the rumbles begin.
Second episode is when this family practises an amount of arts training everyday, under the supervision of the grandfather. Each member of the family performs their special moves and to be part of the family, the future son-in-law must be strong and skillful too. The son-in-law is a nerdy kind of person and martial arts is just not his thing. Well… the catchy part in this episode is the future son-in-law has 2 different personas. He is a nerd and unskillful when he has his glasses on but when he is off his glasses, his inner warrior unleashed.
The third episode is when the future son-in-law nurtures his love towards the family’s daughter. The scene at the living room is freaking funny. They face some funny obstacles and interruptions by her uncle and her parents. The loves scenes which involve her parents and the family’s daughter with future son-in-law in this episode are farking-ly hilarious. Love the tango. I had good laughs in this one.
The final episode is when 2 burglars break into the house, looking for hidden treasure. One is villain and small size (Burglar 1) and the other one is plump and not so smart (Burglar 2). The best part is, they both bring their own radio and play their own sound effect while they are doing their mission. At first, I was thinking, why did they bring a radio when they wanted to rob a house, then when that fat burglar turned off the radio, then only I realized that they made their own sound effects. Funny and yet creative. I personally love the arts skills of Burglar 1; sharp movements, great execution and he the got speed. Awesome. Really awesome. In this final episode, the family fights with them burglars and this is you can see loads of fighting skills.
There are loads other funny scenes, I just can’t put them all in words. All I know is I had good laughs throughout the show.
Main reasons why I love this show :
-
The comical is not slapstick.
-
Amazing martial arts skills that can’t take my eyes off the stage – not a blink.
-
Although the show is non verbal, it’s easy to understand what are they trying to convey.
-
The way they designed the house; a very authentic traditional Korea house. The lighting works are great.
Things that tickle me in this show :
-
The matrix style. There are some slow motion movements when they are fighting with the burglars and also during their daily practice, just to show the audience how they do it. They did it ala Matrix. So movement and the timing are IMPECCABLE. I love when they do this part.
-
The sound effects are great. Things like sound of punching, kicking, fighting weapons are so real and in time with the acts.
-
An old man, which appears at the beginning of each episode is freaking funny. And owh… his skills really bleed my nose. Again.
I wanna watch it again !!! They’re heading down south for their next performance. I wish they will stop by Malaysia again for their next tour.
